Spent a few days in San Francisco over the Easter break — my third visit to the Bay Area — and it felt like revisiting a theme I first explored nearly 26 years ago. Being based out of London and working across global technology and financial services ecosystems, the contrast between ecosystems and the continuity in how innovation compounds stands out even more clearly, especially after a recent two-week stint across the US, including Los Angeles and New York.
As part of my time at the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (26 years ago), we had a course "Dynamics of the Technology Industry" — expertly led by Prof. Balaji Parthasarathy — which compared ecosystems across Silicon Valley (USA), Dublin (Ireland) and Bengaluru (India). Back then, it was largely academic — talent pools, policy support, cost structures, proximity to capital.
A visit to Dublin in 2024 had already brought one part of that theory to life — seeing firsthand how Ireland has built a powerful tech hub through policy clarity, tax structures, and its position as a gateway to Europe for global firms.
Being in the Bay Area now, you see the full contrast — and how that original framework has evolved.
A visit to Google's Googleplex, the Apple Park Visitor Center, and a stop by Stanford brought this to life. At Apple, the augmented reality experience — where you can visualise the entire campus in 3D — perfectly captures how the Valley blends digital and physical worlds effortlessly. Stanford, in many ways, sits at the heart of this ecosystem — where academia, entrepreneurship, and venture capital intersect seamlessly.
And then you see the capital layer up close. A short drive takes you past Sand Hill Road — arguably the most concentrated stretch of venture capital in the world — and University Avenue in Palo Alto, where ideas move from café conversations to funded companies at remarkable speed. What stands out is not just the presence of capital, but how physically close everything is — founders, investors, engineers, and operators all operating within a tight radius, constantly intersecting.
That density extends into San Francisco city as well. Across San Francisco, within a tight urban radius, sit companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Salesforce — shaping the next wave of AI and enterprise platforms, alongside a constant churn of startups, talent, and ideas.
A conversation that stayed with me was how the number of apps coming up for review on the Apple App Store has risen dramatically — driven by the rapid pace of mobile app development now being accelerated by AI. It's another signal of how quickly the innovation cycle is compressing: ideas are moving from concept to prototype to distribution faster than ever before. Interestingly, this surge is also showing up on the other side — the review lag at Apple has increased significantly, reflecting just how much the volume and velocity of innovation have stepped up.
You also see this innovation manifesting in everyday experiences. Robo-taxis from Waymo are already a common sight on the streets of San Francisco, operating without drivers, while Tesla continues to push the boundaries of autonomous driving. What once felt experimental is increasingly becoming part of daily life.
But what becomes increasingly clear is that beneath all of this sits a powerful, often underappreciated layer — the compute backbone.
Within the same Silicon Valley radius sit companies like Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD — quietly powering the AI revolution. From GPUs training large language models to CPUs running enterprise workloads, this layer has become the strategic control point for AI. In many ways, while software defines the experience, compute defines the pace and scale of innovation.
And then, within a short radius more broadly, sit companies like Meta, Netflix, LinkedIn, YouTube, ServiceNow, Workday, Snowflake, Oracle, and Intuit — platforms that define today's digital economy and increasingly embed AI into everyday enterprise and consumer workflows.
And then outside these campuses:
- AI startup ads across metro stations, city buses and bus stop banners
- Conversations in cafés drifting into funding rounds and product pivots
- Operators, founders, and investors overlapping in everyday settings
Innovation here is ambient.
Looking back at that IIIT-B coursework:
- Ireland built strength through policy, tax incentives, and attracting global firms (validated again during my Dublin visit)
- Bangalore scaled through talent, cost advantage, and services-led growth
- Silicon Valley differentiated through capital + risk-taking + network effects
26 years on, those fundamentals still hold — but the Valley has compounded its advantage. Especially now with AI, where speed, experimentation, and access to capital are critical.
Walking past icons like the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts, you're reminded that while the city has history, its real edge is continuous reinvention.
For those of us working across technology, data, and financial services, it reinforces a simple point:
Ecosystems don't just support innovation — they accelerate and compound it.
Interesting to reflect how lessons from a classroom 26 years ago — and reinforced through visits like Dublin in 2024 — are still playing out today, just at a much larger, faster, AI-driven scale.
